When a cat moved in, I had to get rid of most of my plants. Not every plant is safe to chew, but every cat is curious. A cat will explore the whole house, and roam free while you are asleep. So, I looked up all my plants if they were toxic or not for my new family member.

Let me guide you through my search and help you find all the non-toxic plants you can have in your home if you want to make sure your cat stays safe.

Spider Plant,

or if you want to be sure chlorophytum comosum in Latin. It’s easy to care for, and thus ideal for beginners. The spider plant is harmless to cats and even fun for them to bat at. You can hang this up in a hanging basket, just make sure your cat doesn’t play hard with it. Your cat might eat it because spider plants are mildly hallucinogenic. Yeah, sometimes it’s the main reason why some cats like it. I love mine and it was a relief to keep it.

Boston Fern,

or nephrolepis exaltata — a lush, leafy fern that adds a bit of greenery and is safe for cats. The real question is if the cat is safe for the plant. Cats can destroy this beautiful fern just as the sun can harm the leaves. Try to spray vinegar and water mixture on the leaves to keep your cat away.

Areca Palm,

aka dypsis lutescens — a tropical, non-toxic plant that grows tall and can fit into modern home décor. Cats might eat this too, so I recommend buying a big one or a medium-sized palm instead of a small one. You know, it’s take more time to eat a medium-sized palm.

Bamboo Palm,

chamaedorea seifrizii — is one of the best plants to have. Low maintenance and breathe some life into your living space while being completely safe for your cat.

Calathea,

this plant is also safe for cats and a lovely addition to your space. Please don’t forget to cut the old leaves and put this plant in a light shade.

Prayer Plant,

maranta leuconeura — is known for its striking leaves that fold up at night, this plant is non-toxic to cats to chew on during the day. The prayer plant enjoys the cooler, even temperatures found inside your home and indirect light through a shady window or a sheer curtain.

Peperomia

is a great choice for smaller spaces, this plant comes in many varieties, and surprize: is safe for cats. This one is originally from Mexico so I thought they might like sun, but turns out they don’t. So, if you want to keep them alive, find a non-south spot.

Parlor Palm,

or chamaedorea elegans —is another safe palm plant that is easy to care for.

Most succulent varieties, especially the non-cactus varieties like Echeveria.

Your cat will try all the plants, but you don’t have to choose between having a cat and a green home. I hope you like this piece, tried my best to make it sweet and short.
