Five easy steps to ruin your vacation as a professional. Your well-deserved holiday is going to be a mess, guaranteed exhaustion.

All my life, I’ve learned from mistakes. My mistakes and also other people’s mistakes. Growing up, I saw how not to do things, but I had no clue how to do things. This means that I also made a ton of mistakes myself until I understood the right way. It would be a shame not to share it with anyone interested. So, if you are a bit like me and can learn from other people’s mistakes, here I am. I have good news for you!

Learn from my mistake, step by step.

After a holiday in Spain, I came home drained. I had to sleep a lot more than I expected. I started to thinking what went wrong. Now I see.

To add to the context: I haven’t been on vacation for four years. I have two kids, and I love doing nothing on the beach except saying aloud how I love doing nothing on the beach.

Here are my five easy-to-follow steps on how to wreck your holiday and not feel energized at all afterward:

  1. Check your phone regularly!

Primarily social media and emails from work. Breathe in the FOMO and check your mailbox, Slack, and LinkedIn as soon as you have internet access. You might miss a good laugh or some shocking news. Is everything all right in the workplace? They must be struggling without you (they are not!). You will feel much better if you see that everything is all right both on the internet and in real life. Check every time you feel bored or experience anxiety about the importance of your existence.

2. Engage in online meetings

Come on, do it! It’s just 15 minutes, why would you miss that? It probably will help you not lose touch with reality, specifically work.

3. Time to catch up with postponed tasks

What were you saying when you wanted to check your taxes? Now you have plenty of time to go through the messages, emails, notifications, and all the boring stuff you postponed. Just do it now, and enjoy the holiday later.

4. Avoid authentic places!

Never try out new food. That is a losing game. Why? Because there are only two outcomes. If you don’t like the food: congratulations, you wasted your time and money on a bad experience! How do you feel now? If you like the food, that is not good either. Yes, you had a lovely meal, but you must come back if you want that same taste. You can request a recipe, but it won’t be the same. It will throw you back exactly where you are from. How nice!

5. Discover your hotel and spa

You must not leave the resort or hotel if you commit to ruining your vacation. The ocean is great, but there are no animals in the pool, although I might be wrong. At least there are no waves, rocks, or sand in the pool. The water temperature is perfect, and your room is close. There is WiFi, so it’s easy to follow my first three steps. There is one more good thing about not leaving your resort or hotel: you won’t see or experience anything out of your comfort zone.

Enjoy your ducked holiday, and thank me later!
