How To Handle Your Hangover

Hangovers are the regrettable sequel to a great party. The hangover is so useless, unwelcome, and physiologically unpleasant that even thinking about it hurts my brain.

Know Your Enemy

Let’s see what is happening during a hangover. The worst part comes around ten hours after your blood alcohol peaks. But remember, like your fingerprint, your hangover is unique to you, thanks to the cocktail of factors like gender, weight, and your genetic blueprint.

There are plenty of myths about how to handle a hangover well. Lots of people have their own way that works only for them. Yeah, I’m talking about you, my old friend who ate tomatoes before a big party to prevent headaches. You can try, dear reader, but if you ask me, that experiment failed big time.

I have an easy-to-follow plan when I choose to drink, which is rarely the case. But this time, I made another plan for other people I care about. It was just a nice reminder on Slack until now.

Prevent the hangover in the obvious way:

1. Choose alcohol-free drinks.
2. Drink smaller measures.
3. Drink a glass of water between drinks.

Yes, I know it’s dull. That’s why I did a little research to present better options.

Debunk The Myths!

Debunk the myths, at least some of them. In my quick research (reading a book) on drinking games and hangovers, I found this book very helpful and fun. I absolutely recommend the little book Drinking Games by Riley King.

Wine is Fine!

Yikes, no! Lots of red wines contain a large amount of tannins and sulphites. Those bad boys are famous for causing headaches. If you have to drink red wine, try to buy a sulphite-free one. It will be more expensive, but can you put a price on your headache?

Women and Men Suffer the Same

As a woman, I wish. But women store more fat in their bodies, which doesn’t absorb alcohol. This means more alcohol flows through their bloodstream, making them feel more drunk that night and experiencing a long hangover the other day. Take care, ladies!

Coffee Helps

Well, caffeine can help you feel more awake, but too much coffee could make you even more dehydrated. Try herbal tea instead. Why? Because herbal tea has tons of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Also, herbal tea is known to relieve nausea. Yeah, that tiger should be you drinking some lovely herbal tea.

I’m here to help

Now you know what not to do. But what to do instead? Let’s see.

Lemon and Honey Will Make You Feel Sunny

Honey contains fructose, which helps speed up the breakdown of the alcohol. Lemon has alkaline properties, which help restore balanced Ph levels in the body. Make sure that your first drink will be a good old lemonade.

Sweat it Out

Nope, not in the sauna. Sweat it out by exercising. Take it slow and go for a walk. Or there are plenty of nice moves that make you sweat, and you don’t even have to leave the house. I mean, dance. Duh!

Water, Shots, Water, Shots

You might be sipping on whisky, holding on to your wine all night, or dancing through the night with shot breaks. Whatever your style is, always make room for water in your schedule. Drinking water in between your real drinks will help reduce your hangover symptoms.

Rise and Shine!

Now, you are almost ready to handle your hangover. If I may suggest an idea: Invite your friends for a brunch afterparty. What to eat? Here are a few excellent tips from the book:

  • French Toast
  • Scrambled Eggs
  • Berry Smoothie
  • Chicken Noodles
  • Beans on Toast

Thank you for reading! I hope these tips help.
