Have You Stopped Thinking?
There is a very quick and easy way to find out if you stopped thinking or not. I learned it from my favourite writer, psychotherapist, and professor Dr. Péter Popper. So, let me help you.
Popper said: “If you have an opinion it means you stopped thinking.”
Wait, what?!
It's because thinking has no end. You can think of anything for the eternity. Well, until you are alive and capable of thinking for sure. But don’t hurry to form an opinion on everything. Yeah, I need to remind myself from time to time.
As a young lady, I was opinionated. And I think it’s a healthy thing to be. It’s good to have opinions when you are young. You have to establish what is good and bad. It will help you distinguish good from bad. As we grow we realize things are not black and white. Our vision is sharper.
Things are more like grayish.
Here is an example: as a kid we were told to not tell lies, not to steal or murder anyone. But we later have to realise that life is not that easy. There are loopholes. Some situations are unimaginable as a kid.
We tell lies not to hurt someone or to hurt someone.
We feed others with stories about heroes and dogs that living another good life on a farm. We tell someone we don't remember confessing our emotions even though we do. We can be afraid of telling the truth because it's easier to say ´I'm fine!´.
We steal because stealing is not perfectly explained.
You do not always own the thing you steal. The pictures people generate by AI are stealing or not? Pirating a movie is stealing or not? Borrowing a book for a very long time can feel like stealing (for me for sure). Did I just steal Popper’s idea or not?
We even murder. We kill because of self-defense.
Is that even ethical?
So, slow down with the opinions and think a bit longer today.
Never stop thinking!
Thank you for choosing me today!
